Hostel Hikers Den, Zabljak, Montenegro
If you’re into hiking and outdoor activities, this hostel is a must.
Hostel Hikers Den is located in the small town of Zabljak, in Montenegro’s north. The town is at the edge of Durmitor National Park, full of stunning mountains and lakes – ideal for hikers! There are also opportunities for canyoning and rafting in the nearby Tara River Canyon.
The hostel has a range of dorms and private rooms, prices starting at just €12 a night. There is a well-equipped kitchen, a couple of lounges and tables inside and plenty of seating outside for the warmer evenings. While it’s usually pretty warm in the summer, the altitude means that it can get cold sometimes and you’ll almost certainly need a jumper and long trousers for the evenings.
Alex, the owner of the hostel, is an absolute gem. Upon arrival, he’ll sit down with you and make a plan for your time in Zabljak. He’ll offer canyoning and rafting tours and suggest some incredible hikes.
Each morning, he’ll ask where you’re going and make sure you’re prepared for your day. If you’re going on a hike, he’ll talk you through the trail in detail and pin places on your map to ensure you don’t get lost. He’ll tell you how much water to bring, remind you to put on sunscreen and even organise a taxi if you need one to get to a starting point.
Alex can answer any and every question you might have about the area. For example, after hiking to the peak I asked him “You know that mountain on the way up that has the squiggly lines in it… How did it form like that?!” And despite my vague questioning, he gave me a detailed answer that I am going to simplify into “Glacier movement”
He is the reason this hostel is so amazing. He takes the time to get to know his guests and ensure they get the best out of their stay.
If I haven’t convinced you to book in yet, maybe these pictures of the area will help…
