Top 5 Things To Do In Fethiye, Turkey
Fethiye was one of my favourite places in Turkey – although, perhaps I say that about too many places in Turkey. I just loved it all! I think what makes Fethiye so great is that there’s a bit of everything. There’s a cute little old town to roam around, some history to take in, lots of lovely people to befriend and stunning natural landscapes all around. I only stayed a few nights, but I’m sure I could’ve easily filled a week exploring the town and its surroundings.
So… What should you do while you’re in Fethiye?
1. Roam the streets
The old town is gorgeous. Take, for example, these two little colourful streets:
The old town streets are all pedestrian walkways filled with restaurants, ice cream stands, souvenir shops and a few slightly more authentic textile shops (oh, if only I had a house to fill with these goodies!) Given that the tourism in Turkey is kinda bust right now, the streets of Fethiye are quiet and peaceful.
2. Watch a sunset over the harbour
A walk along Fethiye’s harbour is pleasant day or night, but it’s particularly spectacular at sunset. While the waterside restaurants are not the cheapest, they offer incredible views and (from my experience) great food. I enjoyed sitting up on the rooftop at Fora Cafe and watching the sunset while I had my dinner.
3. Visit the Rock Tombs
A little piece of history. I’m not gonna lie: I am no history buff. In fact, I was off with the fairies for most of my history lessons in school… BUT traveling the world ignites a little spark of interest in history for me and I thought this was cool. Fourth century tombs, built into the side of a mountain, where the Lycian people buried their honoured deceased: impressive. Not only are the tombs incredibly cool, but the mountain-side location provides wicked views of the town and the bay.
4. Shop at the Market
One might say I’m a market junkie. Everywhere I go, I make it a priority to sus out the best local markets. The Fethiye market only happens on Tuesdays, so if you’re lucky enough to be in town on the right day of the week, it’s well worth a visit. It’s HUGE. There is a section full of fruits and vegetables and local produce (more Turkish delight than you’ve ever seen in your life!) Then there’s a ‘food court’ type section with an endless array of Turkish pancakes. As well as the local food, there’s some cheap clothing, jewellery, bags, souvenirs… The list goes on and on and on…
5. Go on a Boat Trip
My absolute favourite thing about Fethiye is the beauty that surrounds it: mountains, valleys, beaches. The best way to see a bit of the natural beauty is by boat. In just a few hours you can see various beaches, bays and islands…and it’s dirt cheap. Read all about my boat trip here.
